Spicy Salad

I know that some people get bored with plain lettuce, but it doesn’t take much to take that plain lettuce and jazz it up!

For this salad, I took some mixed leaves and added slices of tomato and cucumber. I do like to use “proper” tomatoes, you know the ones that actually taste of tomato.

To jazz it up, I added some mini chilli salami (no not pepparami, but a posh version) and some Spanish manzanilla and couchillo olives.

I didn’t add a dressing, as there is plenty of flavour in the olives, the oil from the olives and the spicy salami. However if you are that way inclined I would make a simple dressing of good olive oil and some white wine vinegar.

Spicy Salami Sticks

SnackProbably the best way to describe these is as posh Pepparami. Though they are very much better and taste nicer than the over processed salty snack that is Pepparami.

They are thin salami sticks with chilli. They are chewy and slightly spicy. The chilli is subtle and certainly doesn’t overpower them.

I enjoyed them as a snack, but not sure if I would buy them again.

Bruschetta Salami

On a recent visit to Pizza Express (had some Tesco vouchers to use up) I chose for my starter, the Bruschetta Salami at £4.75, the menu said it consisted of mozzarella, cured Italian meats, olives, rocket and grana padano.

Reading the menu and seeing bruschetta, I anticipated seeing some toasted ciabatta topped with all the other ingredients. So I was quite surprised when it arrived…

Using a pizza style base was certainly not what I expected and was quite surprised by. However the dish as a whole worked well and I really enjoyed it.

French Picnic Lunch

Picnic lunch

This photo appeared in David’s photostream recently from his holiday in France. It reminded me of the typical French picnics I use to eat in France when I was young and on my last visit there (back in the 1990s). There is something very French about a French flute or baguette, pate, cheese and fresh tomatoes. Maybe some saucisson sec or other dried salami. Washed down with a small bottle of French lager or possibly a glass of red wine. Just hungry thinking about it.

Italian Salad

Sometimes simple food can be delicious and tasty.

This Italian salad I made for lunch comprises some slices of salami and cold roasted pork loin. I served it with some mixed  lettuce leaves and tomato, with ripped mozzarella dressed with basil leaves, olive oil and vinegar.
