Pizza Hut to be a Tim Hortons

After losing Frankie and Benny to Burger King, we now know that the old Pizza Hut restaurant in Weston-super-Mare is to become a Tim Hortons.

I had no idea what a Tim Hortons was. The initial news report I read said a Canadian chain which sold coffee and doughnuts. I was quite intrigued. Was this going to be a sophisticated coffee place? They have a number of outlets already in the UK, so I checked the website.

Ah well looking at the menu, yes they sell coffee, yes they sell doughnuts, but it looks much more like a burger chain than a coffee chain.

I probably won’t be visiting when it opens.

Stuffed

Yesterday we had lunch at Pizza Hut, not my first choice for pizza, but when there is no other choice, what choice did I have?

I decided that though I really didn’t like the idea of the stuffed crust, I really couldn’t say anything bad about it as I have never tried one. So when I ordered my pizza I did order a stuffed crust.

So did it add anything?

No.

Pizza Hut Pizza

When I visit Pizza Hut, I try not to think of it as a place to eat Italian food, much more a place that serves American food. So when I have a pizza there, it’s not trying to be an Italian Pizza, but something that would be more at home over the pond than down in the south of Europe. Once I’ve got my head around that then I can just forget authenticity and think about eating pizza.

Going for the Best Ever Supreme, this was a thin crust pizza that came with chicken, black olives, beef, pepperoni, red onions and mixed peppers, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.

I quite enjoyed the pizza, yes the tomato sauce is a little too salty for my tastes, and the black olives were a little too “boring”, but the thin base was good, tasted of bread and was crisp without been too soggy due to the sauce and the toppings. The rest of the toppings were okay and just about right in terms of quantity.

At the Hut

Pizza Hut is not my first choice for pizza, but on my most recent I did quite enjoy the pizza we ordered.

We went with the Best Ever Supreme on a thin Italian base. It came with chicken, black olives, beef, pepperoni, red onions and mixed peppers.

Now if you are expecting classic Italian pizza, then you are in the wrong place, this is Pizza Hut and not a traditional trattoria or ristorante.

The pizza was cooked well and the toppings were just right, not over generous and not measly either. Most of the toppings were fine, though the black olives were a little disappointing.

I enjoyed the pizza and would, if I was at Pizza Hut, order it again.

Salad Bar

Pizza Hut Salad

On a recent visit to Pizza Hut I was once more disappointed with the salad bar. Credit to Pizza Hut in that they are currently giving away unlimited salad if you order a main course, so maybe I am been slightly disingenuous as the salads are free.

Yes there was lettuce, but it was iceberg lettuce. Yes there was cucumber, but it was thick chunks rather than slices. No tomatoes though… The coleslaw was okay, however the potato salad lacked texture and bite.

I think part of my disappointment is the result of a memory from the early 1990s when I visited a branch of the Deep Pan Pizza company and on their salad bar they had chicken wings, fresh pineapple slices and a fantastic range of salads.

Of course as Deep Pan Pizza closed in 1998 there is no chance of visiting them again!

You know why they call it Pizza Hut…

You know why they call it Pizza Hut… because they sell pizza.

Just don’t order the pasta!

For the first time in ages (actually maybe the first time ever) on a family visit to Pizza Hut I made the mistake of ordering a pasta dish.

Before we get to the pasta course, it might be worthwhile trying to explain what I was doing in Pizza Hut. Well though my first choice of place to eat pizza is in the Veneto region of Italy, it’s not that convenient! In the UK I will go out of my way to choose Pizza Express, I have enjoyed the pizza there. I have also enjoyed pizza at Bella Italia and I have had nice pasta dishes there too. However locally there is very little choice and sometimes for a bit of fun (and well lowered expectations) we as a family visit Pizza Hut. Knowing what is available and what to expect, means that I am sometimes disappointed, but at the end of the day more often then not I get what I expect and that’s that!

In recent memory, most times I have been to Pizza Hut I have eaten pizza, I had one of their new Tuscani pizzas, which to be honest was one of the better pizzas I have had at there. I had the Pollo Portobello which had chicken, mushrooms and a light pesto and cream base sauce.

So what about the pasta?

Well I didn’t fancy pizza so went for a pasta dish, ordered the Arrabiata  dish. Which comprised according to the menu ‘large pasta spirals in a deliciously spicy chilli, garlic and tomato sauce with prawns & crayfish tails’.

So what did I get?

Well I did get that, however it wasn’t quite what I expected.

Firstly though the pasta itself was cooked, it was cold. The sauce was warm, but not hot throughout. Scattered through the dish were the prawns and crayfish. If looked and tasted like they took some spicy tomato sauce, heated it up in the microwave and poured over cold cooked pasta and threw in a handful of prawns and crayfish tails.

I did complain it was cold, they took it back to the kitchen and (I guess) must have sent it through their pizza conveyor belt oven. When it came back it was hot, however the prawns were now double cooked, so were shrunk and tough.

Overall a disappointing pasta dish and I won’t make the mistake of eating pasta at pizza hut again, I will stick to pizza!
