Pistachio Danish

Pistachio Danish

One of the things I like about getting a Too Good To Go (TGTG) bag is trying out new places which isn’t going to break the bank. New places open all the time, and sometimes you think, should I try it out, or should I go to my usual haunts. For me the TGTG bag gives me a way to try out their food and not spend loads of money.

For instance I got a TGTG bag from DoubleShot Coffee – Barbers in Bristol. This is an independent, well I want to write cafe, but they also cut hair.

My TGTG bag was valued at £9.00 and cost £2.99.

In my bag I got

Two pistachio danish pastries
A maple pecan danish pastry
A croissant

By my reckoning that was worth £9.

Have to say the pistachio danish was rather tasty.

I will certainly try and get future bags from them, but I think I might also visit them for a coffee another time (probably won’t get a haircut though).

Very nice cakes

One of the things I like about Too Good To Go is the opportunity to try out new places without spending a fortune.  I was in Bristol and there was a bag for Anna Cake Couture for £4 for a £14 value. I got 24 macarons and a cake in my box.

This has a retail value of £57. Not bad for four pounds.

Yes the macarons are slightly less than perfect from a looks perspective, but taste fantastic.  The cake was an end piece. However I was expecting that from the description.  If you don’t like macarons then this isn’t the bag for you. Delicious patisserie. You can see why they have a rating of 4.9 out of 5.

YO! Sushi Magic Bag

I knew I would be around at the collection time of 8pm so I ordered a Too Good To Go Magic Bag from Yo! Sushi at the Mall at Cribbs Causeway.

The app stated £15 of food for £5.

I got three items.

Pack of o-mega Salmon – 3 YO! roll, 4 salmon nigiri, 4 avocado maki
£8.95

Kaiso seaweed – marinated mixed seaweed, edamame & carrot in a su-miso dressing.
£4.25

Classic edamame
£3.25

Value of Bag
£16.45

So it certainly meets the terms of the deal. However on a previous visit I got almost three times as much sushi, and as they had over-estimated the number of bags, they actually made me some fresh sushi for the bag. So though this bag was a good deal, you can imagine I was a little disappointed as the bag did not meet my unrealistic expectations. Would I go again, probably.

Dashing Cakes

I use the TooGoodToGo app quite a bit, more so when I am in London, as there are many more options available. However it can be a bit hit and miss. For example, last year I had a fantastic bag from Cord Cafe on Fleet Street. In that bag I got a cherry croissant, a baguette, and a brioche. Last week when I saw they had a bag on offer, I thought great, that’s breakfast for tomorrow sorted. However in this bag I got a salad, an asparagus pastry, and a sausage roll.

Last month in London I was staying close to Olympia and I looked at the TooGoodToGo app and Dash Cakes on Kensington High Street had a magic bag deal.

I got four cupcakes, a fruit tart, a macaron, and a chocolate gâteau slice. The bag cost just £3.39. I was well impressed, and all the cakes were delicious. I am not that big a fan of cupcakes, especially biscuit cup cakes, even so these were scrummy cupcakes.

The fruit tart and chocolate gâteau slice were excellent, as was the macaron (even if it was blue).

I was really impressed with the quality and quantity of cakes, and I certainly would not just use the TooGoodToGo app with them again, I would also pay full price for their cakes as well.

Raspberry Bicolour Brioche

I got a TooGoodToGo magic bag from the Cord Cafe on Fleet Street. In my bag I got a cherry croissant, a baguette, and a brioche.

Raspberry Bicolour Brioche

This wasn’t any old brioche, this was a  bicolour brioche, with a raspberry compote insert, garnished with both fresh raspberries and freeze-dried raspberries.

This was a rather tasty brioche.

Ô Craquelin Pâtisserie

As I walk around London there are quite a few posh looking pâtisserie shops selling exquisite cakes and pâtisserie. I might look in the window, but I rarely spend my pennies (well pounds) in there.

I was having a look around the TooGoodToGo app and saw that Ô Craquelin Pâtisserie had a magic bag. £18 of cakes for £6. I checked their website and quite liked the look of their offerings. I saw this magic bag as an opportunity to try out the cakes without spending a large amount of money.

Ô Craquelin Pâtisserie is a specialist pâtisserie close to Covent Garden. It describes itself as a micro-pâtisserie offering modern, hand-crafted desserts.

I had to wait around a bit to pick it up after work, but it was a nice sunny day.

I was given a warm welcome and went inside and told them I had a TooGoodToGo deal. After tapping and swiping, they popped into the fridge for a box, for a second I thought that was all I was going to get, then they picked up another box. I got a bag and placed them both in there.

Overall I got four cakes. Two chilled fresh cakes and two ambient cakes.

Now I actually have no idea what I actually got, as there were no labels. Now checking their website I can check what I had.

This was the Matcha Orange canapé.

Orange Madeleine enclosed within matcha mousse with white chocolate sable. It was quite nice, and you could taste the orange.

This was the 100% Pistachio canapé.

Pistachio Financier, pistachio cream and pistachio sable. This one I did guess as pistachio and was similar to the Matcha Orange canapé. I didn’t feel it had that intensity of pistachio flavour I would expect from pistachio pâtisserie.

I also got these two pâtisserie, which I have no idea what they were.

This was very nutty.

This had nuts and ganache.

Both were very nice.

I did enjoy the pâtisserie, but I am not sure I would go out of my way to get them again. They were good, but maybe I had high expectations, I was expecting excellence, what I got was delicious, great looking pâtisserie. What I didn’t get was an amazing pâtisserie experience. Maybe it might have been different if I went to the cafe there and had the pâtisserie with coffee, soaking in the atmosphere and the ambiance.

I quite like TooGoodToGo as a mechanism to try places out, see what they sell and how good it is. So in this instance, yes I felt I got a good deal, nice cakes, but would I go back, probably not.
